Basford v Swaffham

Sunday 2nd March 08

A dry and sunny sunday saw the girls travel to Norfolk to play the Swaffham girls in an eagerly awaitred game.
With 4 players missing through injury following the previous weeks national cup games,
Jess Broken Arm
Abbie Cracked Ribs
Yas Back
Olivia Hip
and 4 others due to holidays or family commitments, the Basford girls were understrength for the game with only 10 players travelling..
With only 3 recognised forwards available the girls soon found the going tough against a strong Swaffham pack who were intent on winning every scrum.
following some good play of the back of a scrum, Swaffham broke free to go over to score the first try of the day 5-0.
It wasnt long before the swaffham girls were again pressing the Basford girls back into their own 5m area and the inevitable soon occured when they went over for their second try of the game 10-0.
Some half time rearranging of the positions saw the girls start the 2nd half with a bit more vigour.
It wasnt long before Alex imposed herself in the centre of the field to go over for her first try 10-5, which was quickly followed by a try from mouse who dived over bodies on the floor to touch down, 10-10.
the 3rd and possibly best try of the day fell to Maddy who collected a high ball on the half way line and ran straight back at the Swaffham defence and crashed through to give the Basford Girls the lead 10-15.
Swaffham continued to attack and constantly posed a threat through the middle of the field.
The game started to slip away from Swaffhamas Alex broke through from the centre and evaded a couple of tackles to go over for her 2nd try of the day. 10-20.
The hard fought victory was finally sealed just before full time when maddy went over for her 2nd try of the day 10-25.

A hard fought victory for the girls, but a game that was in danger of slipping away from them in the 1st half.
Full credit goes to all the girls at Swaffham and Holt who played their part in a really entertaining game of rugby.
The return at Basford in April promises to be an exciting encounter.

Special thanks for the 2 girls from Fakenham who kindly helped us out on sunday due to our low numbers.

Man of the match Basford Layla Pickering
Swaffham Katie Parkes

The after match drink off between the 2 man of the match girls saw Katie convincingly down her pint of orange quicker than Layla to take the honours for Swaffham.
(we will be putting in some extra practice after training on tuesday)

Thanks to Malcolm and all the crowd in Swaffham for making everyone welcome and for making it an enjoyable day.
