Girls
Please see below the message from Mandy "Eh up North tha knows"
Well done to all those girls who took part last weekend, it were a reet grand day and every one at our end had a great weekend, (even Lucie who now holds the world record for shower diving)
Phil
Hi Phil,
What a day...what fun!!
I truly hope you had a great (if not cold!!) weekend. It was lovely to meet old friends...it was great for the U18's on both sides to have one last blast together before they become fully fledged open age players. Our U15's haven't experienced anything like this and they had a ball as did their parents....long may this friendship between the White Roses and the Stilletoes of the South continue..
I need your tournament date for next season ASAP...I've been given the green light to proceed with both age groups from Vicki & Yorkshire CB (but I need to talk to the other Northern Counties)...
How's the shower victim?....we had one broken collar bone....

The Battle Commences!!!
Before we get in t’ nitty gritty of the Basford Invasion of some far flung wet and windy place in t’ middle of nowhere!!! over the Easter weekend. A few thanks are in order.
(1+1) Paula and Tina for setting the whole thing up, without them putting in a lot of hours and leg work this wouldn’t have got of the ground.
(1+1) Mandy at the Yorkshire RFUW for all the work she put in, helping (1+1) arrange things from t’ Northern end.
(1+1) all those girls who along with the many spectators turned out on a bitterly cold day (1+1) play/watch some great rugby.
(1+1) the staff at Malton &Norton RFU who made us feel at home from the moment we arrived and allowed us (1+1) completely take over their club house for the day/evening.
And finally (1+1) all the Basford Girls for making it a fun weekend.
Summary of the Invasion
Just before dawn broke, the massed hoards of the Basford invasion force boarded their battle bus and crept cat like along the A1 towards their intended target.(cos Rob the driver got scared if he went over 50mph)
Having stopped (1+1) try out their battle plans on the small community of Blyth Moto services, the invasion force quickly and efficiently stripped the service area of all edible rations (well one of the U18 forwards did)
then re boarded the battle bus and made the final leg of the journey in(1+1) the unknown.
Preparations for the invasion were going on in earnest aboard the battle bus with the advance “welcoming party” practicing the local dialect ready (1+1) blend in. Cries of “Aye reet” and “Tha Knows” could be heard being recited over and over.
As the morning wore on, you could cut the tension inside the battle bus with a butter knife, and before (1+1) long; the first glimpse of the intended battlefield came into view through the sleet and snow.
Having bravely traversed the snow covered North Yorks Moors and evaded detection from RAF Fylingdales early warning station, the invasion force arrived in Boggle hole.
The battle bus was camouflaged and left up top of t’ hill while the hardy troops then yomped the considerable distance down steep paths (1+1) their base camp.
The Officers, ( well Gavin, Simon, Paul, Steve and Myself) quickly set up our quarters and decided the best plan of attack was (1+1) let every one else get on with it while we lounged about on the sofa’s drinking tea and eating choccy biscuits. (that’s code for planning the next stage)
Our summit was interrupted when Phil ”Flintstone” French somehow managed (1+1) get past our sentry and inform us that we were needed up top as without us the others didn’t have a clue (Nowt new there then!!!!).
The rest of the day saw the troops settling in and readying for battle.
As the afternoon wore on rumours spread that Paul “I’m a Psycho on the booze” Carmen had being “spirited” away by a boggle.
Commander Scott who like his brave forefather didn’t hesitate (1+1) venture out into the cold and ably assisted by his trusty sidekick Phil ”The Judge” Robson they set of across the cliff tops (1+1) try and infiltrate the nearby encampment of Robin Hoods Bay and (1+1) bring their compatriot safely home.
Some hours later, having evaded the clutches of the locals in their hostelries and having tried out their well prepared disguises by conversing with the local chippy owner our intrepid rescue party returned (1+1) camp suffering from severe frostbite and exposure which was swiftly countered with more cups of hot tea and choccy biccies.
Later that evening the troops having polished of the cordon bleu dishes on offer in the mess tent, gathered in the main hall and sang some hearty rousing battle songs around the Karaoke machine.
Commander Scott quickly came up with a cunning plan, which was (1+1) send out Nat “tone deaf” McClarnon as an advance party (1+1) scare the Yorkshire folk with her Banshee Howling.
Battle plans were discussed late into the night over copious cup of hot chocolate ( well the drinks were brown in colour), before the troops retired (1+1) their bunks ready for battle.
(1+1) BE CONTINUED

Letchworth Blog.
Just back from the Basford Tour, I decided to have a look and see whats been happening around the rugby world.
1st port of call as usual, the Letchworth blog run by JB.
This site is fast becoming the place to stop and pass away the time.
The site is getting bigger and better each time I look, and now JB has somehow put the link in to show how people are hitting the site from all over the world.
Girls forget the club rivalry on the pitch, have a look at this site and be amazed at the news available regarding the sport.

Invasion is imminent!!!!!!
Our spies have fed back information that those northeners have got wind of the planned invasion from the South and are readying their air support in preparation.
Photos obtained by our brave undercover team show them swooping on unsuspecting villagers over t border in lancashire. The team only escaped the airborne assault by wearing cow pats on their heads which from the skies gave the impression of a flat cap as worn by t Yorkshire folk.
Tips on avoiding detection by t northern folk
Your name is Bert or Ethel not Shaz or Trace
Do not wear white shoes and burberry hats in public
If engaged in conversation with a northerner do not say things such as "my Chardonnay wants to be a hairdresser when she grows up"
If discovered a couple of quick phrases to get you out of trouble
a)Reet grand tha knows
b)Eh Up hows thee fathers wippet
c)Geoff Boycott is God
Be Vigilant

Herts Rugby
Last Sunday Welwyn RFC hosted a 3 way County U15 Development fixture involving Herts, Kent and Middlesex.
The U15 fixture was organised on a Regional Training Date to give the 'next tier' of Players the opportunity to gain experience representing the County.
This excellent scheme to promote girls rugby and to keep all those girls who this season were not selected for their regional squads was the brain child of Peter McCullough at Welwyn.
Peter very kindly invited over 2 of the Essex girls who were not involved at Regional and following an email on sunday night, we are pleased to say that both Amy and Mouse had a very good day.
Mouse was played as a scrum half and the report back from Peter was that she played really well.
Amy who is in her 1st season of rugby has already began to shine and has been a welcome addition to the Basford front row this season.
Well done to both girls and a big thanks to Peter for including them in the days programme.

National Cup Round 1
Basford & Welwyn through to the next round of the National Cup.
Due to their ever growing injury list, Both Basford & Welwyn Warriors have entered this year's National cup competition by combining forces with the approval of the RFUW.
The first round match yesterday afternoon at Hobbs Way, saw Basford-Welwyn pitched against one of the upcoming sides in the South, Reading. Warriors had beaten Reading 46-0 earlier this season but Reading had provided a far sterner test than that scoreline suggested. Only last weeek they had beaten Basford so a tough encounter was expected.
It turned out not to be! Although this was the first time Basford &Welwyn had played together, the girls were familiar with each other from plaing in the East of England regional side. Basford & Welwyn ran out comfortable winners 64-0.
Basford's Sarah Carmen broke through the Reading defence time & again to set up tries for the supporting players. Springbok Frankie Dawson claimed the first 2, Hannah Marques the third, Warriors Skipper Hannah Gallagher notched a couple as well as kicking 7 conversions. Basford's Emily Scott grabbed a brace as did Warrior's Alex Robertson and Sarah Carmen claimed a well deserved solo try.
Team Manager Dave Marques was delighted. “'We nearly had to pull out of the tournament as our injury list kept getting longer but Basford kindly agreed to pool resources with us and that meant extra rugby for the girls in both teams, without their help our girls would have had to sit this wekend out. Regional RFUW Coach Andrew Skipper was here today and several of the girls must have caught his eye as they put in some great performances!'

Basford v Swaffham
Sunday 2nd March 08
A dry and sunny sunday saw the girls travel to Norfolk to play the Swaffham girls in an eagerly awaitred game.
With 4 players missing through injury following the previous weeks national cup games,
Jess Broken Arm
Abbie Cracked Ribs
Yas Back
Olivia Hip
and 4 others due to holidays or family commitments, the Basford girls were understrength for the game with only 10 players travelling..
With only 3 recognised forwards available the girls soon found the going tough against a strong Swaffham pack who were intent on winning every scrum.
following some good play of the back of a scrum, Swaffham broke free to go over to score the first try of the day 5-0.
It wasnt long before the swaffham girls were again pressing the Basford girls back into their own 5m area and the inevitable soon occured when they went over for their second try of the game 10-0.
Some half time rearranging of the positions saw the girls start the 2nd half with a bit more vigour.
It wasnt long before Alex imposed herself in the centre of the field to go over for her first try 10-5, which was quickly followed by a try from mouse who dived over bodies on the floor to touch down, 10-10.
the 3rd and possibly best try of the day fell to Maddy who collected a high ball on the half way line and ran straight back at the Swaffham defence and crashed through to give the Basford Girls the lead 10-15.
Swaffham continued to attack and constantly posed a threat through the middle of the field.
The game started to slip away from Swaffhamas Alex broke through from the centre and evaded a couple of tackles to go over for her 2nd try of the day. 10-20.
The hard fought victory was finally sealed just before full time when maddy went over for her 2nd try of the day 10-25.
A hard fought victory for the girls, but a game that was in danger of slipping away from them in the 1st half.
Full credit goes to all the girls at Swaffham and Holt who played their part in a really entertaining game of rugby.
The return at Basford in April promises to be an exciting encounter.
Special thanks for the 2 girls from Fakenham who kindly helped us out on sunday due to our low numbers.
Man of the match Basford Layla Pickering
Swaffham Katie Parkes
The after match drink off between the 2 man of the match girls saw Katie convincingly down her pint of orange quicker than Layla to take the honours for Swaffham.
(we will be putting in some extra practice after training on tuesday)
Thanks to Malcolm and all the crowd in Swaffham for making everyone welcome and for making it an enjoyable day.
